News & Newsworthy

With the winter months being some of the busiest months for travel, Tangerine Travel understands the importance of staying healthy.  Between December and February is peak flu season and in addition to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that individuals receive an annual flu shot, there are a number of preventative steps travelers can take to stay healthy while on the road.

Stay Active in the Sky

During a flight, make sure to walk around the cabin each hour to promote circulation. If you are able, attempt to do some stretching while seated.  Rotate and flex ankles, feet and toes whenever possible to stay limber in tight airplane quarters. If possible wear compression stockings, these will assist in maintaining blood flow for the duration of your trip.  Skip the alcohol and soda and drink lots of water. Water will keep you hydrated and will help to fight swelling and dry skin which can be brought on by your plane ride.

Clean Eating

When traveling, eat foods with high nutritional value, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.  Supplements that include garlic, Echinacea, ginseng and probiotics can also bolster the immune system.  Stay away from foods high in sodium as this can also add pressure on the circulatory system. Eating healthy, well balanced meals does not need to be boring. Take the opportunity to explore new ways to eat.  Hotels are now offering menus based such things as the “philosophy of macrobiotics” or dishes made of raw vegan cuisine.  If your hotel dining options are unappealing, visit restaurants like True Food which is all organic and natural with gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options.

Wellness is Part of Your Stay

More hotels continue to add wellness features, programs and amenities to their everyday offerings.  Fairmont Fit™ and Hyatt properties have introduced yoga, running, walking and hiking tours to guests free of charge. The Mandarin Oriental in Las Vegas (a top destination for meetings and conventions) offers each guest a welcome cup of tea and warm towels upon arrival, vegan and gluten free options in all restaurants, plus complimentary daily yoga and Pilates classes. In addition to fitness and relaxation, make sure to get more than 6 hours of sleep while traveling. Getting less than 6 hours of sleep increases the odds of catching a cold.  Dressing for comfort can help you ease into sleep.  Wear comfortable clothes as tight clothes can cut off blood flow.

Watch for Bacteria

When traveling wash your hands frequently or keep hand sanitizer readily available, especially when touching high-contact areas.  On airplanes, overhead bin handles, armrests, tray tables and bathroom faucets and door handles often contain many strains of bacteria. Keep antibacterial wipes handy to wipe down surfaces that you may use while traveling to lower your risk of catching a bug. In addition to the germs around airports, rental cars and other travel necessities travelers need to watch for everyday activities that can cause illness. When traveling, contact lens wearers should opt for glasses instead of leaving contact lens in for long hours.  When on a plane the dry, recycled cabin air can irritate eyes and can also make them susceptible to outside bacteria.

With peak holiday travel ramping up, TSA officials are reminding travelers to take advantage of pre-screening services. There are so many opportunities to take part in pre-screening. To ensure that you will have the opportunity to utilize the expedited security screen benefits like TSA Pre Check, you must obtain a Known Traveler Number by enrolling in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler program such as Pre Check, Global Entry and NEXUS. Below is some information on each organization to find the best fit for you and your holiday travel.

TSA Pre-Check – This option is great for frequent and business travelers who can go through separate security lines, leave on their shoes and belts, and keep their laptops in the bag. For $85 you can be enrolled in TSA Pre-Check for five years. You must be a U.S. citizen and lawful permanent resident and there is no passport requirement to be approved. You can apply for TSA Pre-Check online and then make an appointment at one of the enrollment centers around the country to provide fingerprints and identification.

Global Entry – This program is great for international travelers and can coincide with TSA Pre-Check. Upon arrival to the United States, you can go straight to a Global Entry Kiosk without filling out any forms. Insert your passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place fingertips on the scanner for fingerprint verification and make a customs declaration. The membership is $100 for five years or you can pay an extra $15 from the Pre-Check program to Global Entry. A passport is required for Global Entry and you can apply online and then make an appointment at one of several enrollment centers around the country to provide fingerprints and identification as well as be interviewed. For a list of eligible countries and more information on Global Entry, click here.

NEXUS – This option is the Canadian version of Global Entry, offering expedited processing at airports and land borders when entering the U.S. and Canada. On the plus side, NEXUS is less expensive at $50 for a five-year membership. The negative is there are only a handful of enrollment centers for NEXUS and they are located near the Canadian borders in places like upstate New York, Maine, Montana and Washington State. You can pre-enroll online, visit an enrollment center for an interview, provide fingerprints and verify ID. There is no passport requirement.  For information on NEXUS please, click here.

In addition to quicker lines, travelers can speed through the screening process at most airports with a pre-screening program. Perks of being enrolled in the program include leaving shoes, outerwear and belt on, laptop in its case and toiletries in carry-on luggage.  If you are interested in enrolling in a pre-screening program, visit tsa.gov to apply online and find enrollment center locations or contact your Tangerine Travel advisor for recommendations on which program is best for you.

With so many places in the Caribbean to visit, Tangerine Travel is excited to see Jamaica is once again emerging as a top destination for travelers to visit. From bustling Montego Bay in the northwest, where most international travelers arrive, to the sleepier beach coves of Saint Mary Parish in the northeast, and on into the rugged interior, a new wave of sophistication is bringing back glamour and polish to the land of the all-inclusive resort. We think it is time to fall in love with Jamaica all over again with the islands perfect weather, gorgeous water and funky and unique vibe. The service and amenities are top notch when staying at all-inclusive or high end resorts. The people, places and culture rival anything you will find elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Roughly the size of Connecticut, Jamaica is easy enough to navigate. Even when you are covering “long” distances, most destinations are no more than two or three hours apart. If you prefer relaxed sightseeing to hectic navigating, leave the driving to professional chauffeurs who will guide you through your island tour. One of our favorite places to visit? Appleton Estate, one of Jamaica’s oldest rum distilleries. After a fun and informative factory tour enjoy a sampling of their five favorite rums, which, come to think of it, may be the best reason of all to hire that driver.

Ready to swap the cold weather for fun in the sun?  Tangerine Travel can organize your stay at the exceedingly stylish Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay. Couples and families alike enjoy activities such as swimming with dolphins, golf on the Robert Trent Jones Sr.–designed course, horseback riding, tennis, shopping, scuba diving, snorkeling and luscious treatments at Fern Tree, A RockResorts Spa®, with its outdoor soaking tubs and walking labyrinth.

Book 4 Nights at the beautiful Half Moon Resort in Montego Bay between now and February 22 and receive the following Tangerine Travel Exclusives:

  • Round-trip airport transfers
  • Upgrade, early check-in and late checkout, if available
  • Breakfast daily for two
  • $200 resort credit per room
  • $100 spa credit

Our favorite place to stay in Sun Valley?  The newly renovated Sun Valley Lodge offers 94 spacious rooms, a new 20,000 square foot spa, workout and yoga space and the cozy feel of a mountain getaway.

Hotel Del Coronado, San Diego California

Hotels are looking to accommodate the ever evolving business traveler.  It is important to have a balance between work and play, and hotels are creating the ideal lodging for those who need a healthy dose of both.  Tangerine Travel advisors have complied some ways to enjoy your corporate travel below:

Prime location - Book a hotel that is centrally located to everything.  More travelers want to explore where their business takes them.  Heading to New York City?  Stay in Midtown, just steps away from Times Square and the NoMad district, Central Park, and fine dining hot spots like Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain.  All that the city has to offer is right at your fingertips.

Workspace with a view - Find a hotel with complimentary high-speed Internet access and Wi-Fi; you can work from anywhere in your hotel with this kind of connection.  Whether you are lounging by an oversized fireplace, a roof top terrace overlooking the city skyline, or a vast portfolio of meetings and event spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows, take your work to a new place other than your room or hotel business office.  In Chicago for business?  Stay at the Four Seasons and enjoy answering emails while overlooking Lake Michigan or take in after work cocktails along Chicago’s Michigan Avenue.

Be creative - Ask your Tangerine Travel advisor if you can fly in to your destination the afternoon before, or leave the morning after.  This will allow you to relax and enjoy your temporary home while on the road.  Look at every trip as a new adventure where you can learn something new about your destination.  Rather than meet in a hotel lobby or restaurant, for example, invite a client or colleague to an exhibition you would like to see based off the recommendation from the concierge.  If the relationship is formal, set up a business meal near the site you want to visit and go before or after.

See the town and break a sweat – In Boston on Business?  Have your travel advisor book your stay at the Hyatt Regency Boston.  During the week the Hyatt Regency offers walking and running tours around the city to see sites such as the Freedom Trail, Paul Revere’s House and Faneuil Hall.  Prefer to find your zen place? The Hyatt Regency Boston also offers Yoga taught by local instructors.

Do not dread your business travel; embrace it!  With the opportunities above and the help of your Tangerine Travel Advisor you will be able to embrace your business travel and add a little pleasure to it as well.  Contact us if you have an upcoming trip and need some inspiration on what to do while you are in town!

Spring should not be the only season earmarked for organization. Tangerine Travel encourages travelers to take a similar approach to the end of the year, with a focus on travel organization. This is an ideal time to de-clutter and prepare for travel in 2016. Here are some ideas to help you organize some of the most important aspects of being on the road:

Passport validity check - Check the expiration date on your passport, and any visas within. If your passport is due to expire in six months, submit renewal paperwork. Many countries will not allow you to enter if you have less than six months until your passport expires. Have questions about your passport or visa?  Tangerine Travel offers expedited services to renew your passport and apply for visas. With regulations and deadlines constantly changing, Tangerine Travel can make sure the correct information is provided to you.

Re-read your credit card fine print – When traveling, especially internationally, it is important to know when your credit card expires and how much you are charged for foreign transactions. Make sure you are not stuck paying minuscule fees - they always add up.  Many major credit card companies now offer no foreign transaction fees. Our suggestion is to keep one specific credit card for use in areas you do not normally travel. This allows a cushion when it comes to your spending limit as well as keeping fees and purchases in one place.

Review your frequent flyer programs – Organize your member numbers, passwords, and mileage balances, as well as mileage and status expiration dates. With 2015 coming to an end, it is a perfect time to see what you are eligible for as a frequent traveler. Try using Award Wallet or Mile Blaster to organize all your information. Each has its own unique way of consolidating your information in to one spot but both are helpful in keeping your information organized while alerting you to miles expiration.

Organize your home while you are away – While you are away accomplish some of the home organization tasks that take more time out of your day than basic laundry and vacuuming chores. Before you leave drop your knives off to be sharpened or have your window treatments professionally cleaned. Think about dropping off any heavy use items at the dry cleaner for a good cleaning, like a winter coat you are not traveling with or the down comforter that you will be using this winter.

Refill and/or update your business cards – You never know who will be sitting next to you on a plane.  Some of the best networking happens when you travel.

Tangerine Travel understands that traveling requires more organization than one may possess in our daily lives. These organizational tips will help you cut the stress that can be involved with traveling.  For more tips on travel, check out our Facebook Page and Twitter
