News & Newsworthy

As summer approaches and vacation season becomes fully underway many will be heading to the open waters for sailings filled with all-you-can-eat-buffets, delicious traditional eats on excursions and unlimited cocktails. As you embark on your next boating adventure set yourself up to feel relaxed and recharged after your trip! Here are a few tips that have helped Tangerine Travel clients feel their best after they disembark.

Create a Support System

Once settling in on the ship head to the fitness center. Many ships provide personal trainers that can offer you nutritional guidance in addition to workouts. Cruise lines such as Crystal offer lighter menus in certain restaurants but you can also request healthy alternatives such as steamed or grilled fish to keep you feeling light

Keep Moving

With health and wellness being a top priority for travelers cruise ships have shifted a large focus to better serving the “fit” trend. Ships offer a range of group classes from spin to aqua aerobics to Pilates. When on the ship, use any on-board credits you may have earned from booking through Tangerine Travel and purchase one-on-one personal training sessions. Not looking for that much athletic activity? Many cruise lines provide weighted vests and poles for passengers who are looking to power walk around the deck.

Avoid Temptation

Many staterooms include a minibar loaded with beer, wine, spirits, and soft drinks. Willpower counts, but studies show that other factors do too – including avoiding temptation altogether. When you arrive remove the contents except for water and your preference of wine (they say a glass a day keeps the doctor away) or spirits as beer and soda tend to make individuals feel bloated. A lot of cruise lines are now offering tea time or afternoon snacks.  Try to snack on fruit or veggies so you feel ready to take on the second part of your day.

Has this inspired your next vacation? Call our Cruise Specialists for the latest itineraries that can be customized to fit your vacation needs! 800.678.8202

Theoretically, the internet offers the tools to research and book your own travel – so why would you work with a travel advisor? Below, stories from our travelers and advisors that illustrate the key reasons. It all comes back to one idea: travel often creates lifetime memories. Why not do it better?

Personalized Planning

When you collaborate with a travel advisor, your trips will be tailored to your needs, interests, and budget. Sean Cowan worked with a Tangerine Travel advisor on a trip to Mexico. "I was planning to propose to my girlfriend and wanted to stay somewhere romantic," says Sean C. "We stayed on Maroma Beach, and our advisor knew the exact an ocean view room to request to maximize the view. It was a perfect trip and a great proposal story!"

Global Expertise and Connections

Tangerine Travel advisors have relationships with people around the world who can arrange experiences that make a trip truly extraordinary. Personal Travel advisor Betsy has worked with several clients on one-of-a-kind travel to Africa. "When you think about the nature of a trip to Africa with all the logistics and the extraordinary amount of choices, it helps to work with someone who really knows what to do when you get there," says Betsy.

Value for the Money

A Virtuoso advisor has access to the same (and often better) pricing than you can find online, and can secure special perks you cannot get on your own. Elizabeth G. worked with a Tangerine Travel advisor on her honeymoon. Initially, price point was a concern – but as the planning began, value became the clear difference in working with an advisor. "Working with an advisor was a lifesaver," says Elizabeth.

VIP Treatment

A Tangerine Travel advisor can get you exclusive access to events, private tours, and other extras. Personal Travel advisor Jo just worked with a couple organizing a trip to the South Pacific. "My goal was to include little things throughout the trip for personalization," says Jo. "I focused on unique personal touches such as specific room upgrades, a welcome bottle of wine and spa credits to make this an unforgettable experience."

Peace of Mind

In addition to saving you time and money, your advisor is available 24/7 before, during, and after your trip; you can just relax and have fun. If you miss your connecting flight to the Bahamas or the weather is not cooperating your Tangerine Travel advisor will be here to help. Call your advisor and avoid standing in long lines to rebook your flight.

Airlines are taking 2016 to focus on exceptional customer service following a successful year of growth. Even with the focus on customer service, carriers are still charging for everything from checked baggage to soft drinks. Tangerine Travel has uncovered some tips and tricks so you can save on extras when you fly.

Skip Baggage Fees

If you can swing it…try to fit all your belongings in your carry-on and board the aircraft t towards the end of boarding process. Many times the overhead bins will fill up as the first boarding groups enter the plane and you will be asked to check your bag. If you prefer not taking chances you can apply for an airline credit card that allows for one free checked bag per flight. Or you can fly Southwest, which allows two checked bags to fly free of charge.

Stay Connected

In-flight Wi-Fi is one of the newest fees to hit air travel and also one of the most popular. This amenity costs about $15, which can add up when you are paying so many other fees. Airlines such as Virgin America offer free Wi-Fi to passengers via Netflix, and JetBlue will have satellite Wi-Fi Free of charge beginning this fall. If you are not flying one of these carriers but need to spend your flight time working, look into Gogo In-flight Internet. If you purchase in advance it can cut your connection fee almost in half.

Another Round

For some, an adult beverage can take the edge off of flying but most travelers feel the need to stick to ginger ale and wait until they are off the plane. With in-flight drinks being so expensive it helps to be part of an airline loyalty program. These programs often include complimentary alcoholic drinks. You can also purchase a seat upgrade on airlines such as Delta. Their Comfort+ option is typically $20-$30 and gets you more leg room, priority boarding, premium snacks and adult drinks at no additional charge.

Spring Break is quickly approaching and while your upcoming family vacation can be a fun experience, traveling with kids will keep you on your toes. From keeping everyone happy to organizing ever detail, family vacations can become exhausting and leave you needing a vacation from your vacation. Tangerine Travel wants to ensure a stress-free travel experience, to make that happen we have complied some tips for traveling with kids.

Plan Well and Use a Travel Advisor

Organization is key when heading out on any trip, but when traveling with kids pre-plan as much as possible. Begin with thoroughly researching your destination. Google can be overwhelming when it comes to travel information. This is where a Travel Advisor can help by streamlining all your information to get the best details to you that will be helpful for your trip. Tangerine Travel Advisors can make sure all your activities, flights, rental car and accommodations are all on one itinerary. They will let you know if you will need to bring a car seat for a rental car, what to expect at the airport (going through security with kids can be challenging), pre-boarding options on your airline carrier and most importantly which attractions at your destination will be age appropriate for kids.

Pack a “Just in Case” Bag

Parents traveling with children should always be prepared for anything. Tangerine Travel Advisors suggest packing a “Just in Case” bag for those unexpected moments that can turn your travel into a nightmare if you are not prepared. Be sure the bag is packed with prescription medications, small toys, snacks, a change of clothes (if you are traveling with an infant make sure to pack a spare outfit for them as well as an extra shirt for you) and anything else you might need before you arrive at you destination.

Explain the Airport and Flight Experience

Make sure that each child traveling understands the whole travel experience from check-in, to security, to boarding. Adult travelers know air travel comes with many lines and it would be helpful to inform traveling children that they may be waiting a lot before getting on the plane. An entertaining idea would be to come up with games such as “eye spy” to keep them entertained while waiting. We suggest checking the TSA requirements when traveling with children here. Traveling families will find that children under 12 no longer need to take off their shoes as part of the screen process. Once through security and successfully seated on the plane use ear plugs or gum to help aid with the popping of ears when the plane takes off. Make sure your traveling kids know that their ears might pop or become uncomfortable during takeoff and landing and that the act of chewing or opening and closing the mouth can alleviate the discomfort.

Be Ready for the Unexpected

We know that having a plan and schedule is the easiest most organized way to travel with children however, adults traveling with kids need to be willing to deviate from the original plan. Watch your kids and alter plans to ensure a successful and fun trip for both them and you. Your itinerary may be too busy for them and that is ok…Memories can be made at any time when traveling with family!

2016 is all about hotels with high-tech amenities, innovative designs, and other upgrades to improve the quality of your stay. From apps that let you check in on your mobile device to robots greeting you at the lobby, making your travel plans this year will include cutting-edge technology, wellness-focused amenities, and innovative family programs. Hospitality trends in 2016 are sure to leave you feeling refreshed and pampered.

Forward-Thinking Designs

Hotels are going through great overhauls in 2016. Many brands are revitalizing rooms, common areas and everything in between.  Of all the hot topics for room renovation this year – noise reductions is at the top of the list. As hotels look to assist guests in maximizing comfort and getting a better night’s sleep, new room designs to reduce noise are important. Hotels such as Holiday Inn Express have redesigned headboards to be made from materials that will decrease noise transfer between rooms, mounted media towers to reduce vibration and an acoustic door, which creates two separate areas in the room. If a room re-design is not part of the plan in 2016, hotels such as Hilton, offer noise-cancelling rooms equipped with speakers emitting a controllable level of white noise.

In addition to renovating  guest rooms, hotel groups are turning lobbies into more communal areas where guests can be together but work separately if desired. With the Millennial visitor in mind, some hotels are featuring nooks where people can interact in the lobby area or lobby bars which allow guests to gather and socialize with small bites paired with fine wines and local craft beers.

Customized Amenities

Hotels are working hard to offer tech-savvy amenities geared to giving guests more control and customization over their stay. Smart mirrors that read headlines and check weather and smart floor tiles that light a path from the bed to the bathroom are just a few innovations coming to Starwood Hotels and Resorts. In addition to the headlines and weather readers in mirrors, guests will also have the opportunity to program their in-room lighting, music and coffee makers. Hilton is adding new tech-driven services such as mobile check-in and room selection that will allow guests to make a quick stop at the front desk upon arrival.

For the upscale traveler, the Peninsula Chicago and the Peninsula Beverly Hills will have tablets operating in 11 different languages in all guest rooms. The Peninsula tablets allow guests to control the room temperature and television, and order room or car service.

The Wellness Trend

Wellness is a hot topic in 2016. Many hotel groups are focusing on engaging wellness-minded travelers. The InterContinental Hotel Group’s newest brand, Even Hotels, offers a foam roller, yoga mat, yoga block and core exercise ball in every room along with access to on-demand fitness videos. Other hotels give guests access to a specific exercise room with amenities such as a cardio-focused room or a spin-focused room.

When travelers think of wellness and what it entails most go straight to a work-out fueled stay. Wellness is more than an active lifestyle and hotels are hoping to engage guests in a focused health-conscience experience. Many hotels are now offering all-natural, organic, locally sourced foods that are not only healthy but taste delicious.

Road Warriors and frequent travelers all have a common complaint this time of year – catching the bug that no one wants. When travelers are in close proximity to other travelers at airports, on a plane, riding any form of public transportation or at convention centers anyone can understand why travelers are at a serious risk of inhaling someone else’s germs. Our Tangerine Travel Advisors have some simple solutions you can implement to heighten your chances of staying healthy on your next trip.

Keep Your Hands Clean

We have been taught to wash our hands and keep them clean since we were children and now as adults who are traveling the tedious task of constant hand washing is crucial. Surfaces that travelers come in contact with have been touched by lots of people, leaving you unwanted germs from those who may have been sick. With tray tables, overhead air vents and seat belt buckles being some of the worst areas touched it is crucial to keep wipes on hand to wipe down surfaces use sanitizer with at least 50 percent alcohol content. Always remember to wash your hands or use sanitizer before you eat, or touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

Clean Eating

Healthy eating helps more than just your waistline when you are on the road, it can help you stay well. Your body needs a balanced diet to function completely. Without a well-balanced meal, your body is less likely to fight off illness. Same goes for skipping meals. Plan meals, pack healthy snacks in your carry-on and drink plenty of water when traveling. This may seem difficult but, many airports are adding health-focused restaurants for travelers to sit down and dine or grab something to go. Denver International Airport (DIA) has recently added Root Down to their restaurant lineup. The popular Denver restaurant opened its DIA location two years ago and focuses on locally sourced, all natural ingredients that will fill you and keep you healthy without weighing you down.

Clean Your Seat

The beginning of the year is peak cold and flu season and sometimes you will need to go the extra mile to give yourself the best chance of staying healthy. Planes, trains and public transportation like the bus or subway see a lot of people each day. Most of the time if seats are wiped down it is a quick clean. To help yourself, pack some sanitizing wipes or spray and wipe down anything that could be touched by previous passengers. Most public areas can be cleaned but very rarely are sanitized and it will prove worthwhile if you can manage to skip this season’s nasty illnesses.
