New Airline Distribution Capability will allow travel agencies to customize and improve customer experience

As mentioned in our annual Strategy Meetings, the New Distribution Capability (NDC) program from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is still in the early stages of its capabilities and standards, and soon travel agencies will begin to see some real benefits to improve customer experiences.

Travel agencies will be able to provide a profoundly differentiated, customized, rich content, with more competitive services to corporate and personal travelers, regardless of content source.

Until now, increasing profit margins from ancillary sales have allowed high competition among airlines based on price. However, now carriers are working to “de-commoditize their products” said John Bukowski, director of global content and distribution strategy at Amex GBT.

This will make airlines compete not only based on the lowest price, but mostly on the real value of their products in terms of service and amenities where NDC standards will help enable that, says Bukowski.

Meanwhile, Travelport’s global head of new distribution, Ian Heywood, emphasizes that “airlines have a responsibility to create value in order to achieve this goal – it should not just be a shift of connectivity, but an addition of value to corporate and leisure travelers.”
