Air Canada Completes Purchase of Aeroplan Loyalty Business and is Set to Launch New Loyalty Program in 2020

On January 11th, Air Canada confirmed the purchase of Aimia Canada Inc – the owner and operator of Aeroplan Loyalty Business. The airline has also announced it will honor Aeroplan Members’ Miles on a one-to-one basis when the new plan is introduced next year.

Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada, stated that “Air Canada is creating an industry-leading loyalty program that aims to provide unmatched flexibility, choice and convenience for customers when it debuts in 2020… For many Canadians, given Aeroplan’s privileged access to Air Canada, it is the next best currency to the Canadian dollar… Finally, with today’s transaction, customers will have certainty that they can continue to earn and redeem Aeroplan Miles confident that their existing Air Canada Altitude status and privileges are secure.”

Since this announcement in May 2017, Air Canada has surveyed more than 30,000 customers to identify key program attributes. The findings reveal the preference for using Aeroplan miles in the new airline loyalty program and the expectation to be the best loyalty program in Canada.
