White House report calls for rapid bio-fuel development

The Obama Administration has released a report this week calling for the rapid commercial development of switch grass and other bio-fuel crops. Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen saluted the initiative, saying, "A more coordinated effort from federal agencies, together with the continuation of sound bio-fuels policies, such as extending existing incentives, will go a long way toward meeting and exceeding America's renewable-fuel potential."

Airports may face delays, space constraints with full-body scanners - As the Transportation Security Administration prepares to install 950 full-body scanners during the next two years, experts are warning the devices could cause significant delays and logistical headaches at airports around the country. Some airport executives have complained about the size of the devices, which are significantly larger than current metal detectors. The scanners also take about 15 seconds per passenger, leading to "significant passenger delays at the checkpoint," according to an industry group.  

BA poised to withdraw short-haul premium - British Airways could be poised to drop its business class on a number of short-haul services in its battle to stem record losses. Chief executive Willie Walsh said that cuts in business travel expenditure have made it unsustainable to fly executives in larger seats on short journeys.

The opening of W Hollywood kicks off another year of international growth for W Hotels, which is on track to more than double its global portfolio by 2011.

Hotels increasingly make the stretch to offer yoga classesLong a staple at spas and retreat centers, yoga classes are moving into the mainstream and becoming standard amenities at many hotels and resorts as guests appreciate the chance to stretch and relieve the stress of travel. While some chains offer yoga classes on their on-demand channels, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts is hiring a yogi to develop signature classes for the chain's Willow Stream Spas, and the Parker Palm Springs has built an open-air yoga studio as part of its spa.

Starwood Explores Redevelopment of Sheraton Times Square - Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. unveiled major redevelopment plans for the 665-room Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square in New York City. The company said it is exploring a variety of options to maximize the long-term value of the property, which occupies 395,000 square feet of real estate, covering a full city block, bounded by Broadway, Seventh Avenue and 51st and 52nd Street near Times Square.

  U.S. Department of State Updates

U.S. meets resistance on collection of foreign-visitor data -  The U.S. is pushing foreign countries and airlines to provide personal and criminal data on people planning to take flights to the U.S. but have encountered resistance because of possible increased costs. The Obama Administration's plan is aimed at preventing terrorists from getting on airplanes overseas. The effort comes after bombing suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab boarded a flight in Amsterdam headed for Detroit on Christmas Day. Police officials allege he attempted to detonate an explosive. The bomb did not go off, and the plane landed safely.

State Department Travel Warnings, Announcements - The Department of State has issued travel warnings and/or announcements regarding travel for American citizens to Germany, Mozambique, Honduras, Hajj, India, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Cuba, Mauritania, Mexico, Algeria, Colombia, Guinea, Lebanon, Cote d'Ivoire, Philippines, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Kenya, Afghanistan, Burundi, Nigeria, Haiti, Iran, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Chad, Nepal, Georgia, Sudan, Syria and Somalia.
