Airlines and Airport Updates

Sea-Tac braces for full-body scannerSeattle-Tacoma International Airport is scheduled to install its first full-body scanner next month, stirring a local debate over privacy, safety and effectiveness. "People should not just accept this as a foregone conclusion," says an attorney with the Electronic Privacy Information Center, which is suing to block the nationwide rollout of AIT devices. But a Transportation Security Administration spokesman says the machines are safe and effective, with built-in safeguards for travelers' privacy.

Better baggage surveillance means fewer payouts from TSA - In 2003, the Transportation Security Administration paid claims 66% of the time when passengers reported stolen or damaged items in their checked luggage. Last year, only 20% of claims resulted in a cash settlement averaging $180.35 per claim, down from $369.85 when record-keeping began eight years ago. Why the decrease? "We have become more adept at investigating our claims and discerning if there is any TSA responsibility," says a TSA spokeswoman, noting the agency has added surveillance cameras, supervisors and claims investigators. "That's important because, unlike airlines, we're dealing with taxpayer money."
